Plant Support
MAY 3, 2024
This week you guys had lots of questions about netting + how to support your plants!
Plant support is a great thing to focus on as we get deeper into the growing season - supporting your plants will keep them upright, out of walkways, and give you the longest and straightest stems for using an arrangements.
No matter which support method you use, remember to support the plants at a low spot (12" from soil level) and a secondary spot (2-3' from soil level). Some plants may need an additional layer as they grow even taller!
01. Netting:
This is the method I use most often because it is efficient for the way I grow (in blocks of one single crop). Netting comes typically in 4' widths, but the squares are 6" apart, so you can narrow it down as needed
2. Stakes + Clips:
This is a great method if you're growing just a few plants! You can use this method on cosmos, zinnias, dahlias, and sunflowers! Make sure your stake is 5 feet or taller, so you can support the plant as it grows
03. Stakes and Twine
This is a very common option if you want the ease of supporting a whole bed but you don't want to use netting. A reel showing how-to is coming to my feed soon!
4. Tomato Cages
You'll never catch me using tomato cages for my tomatoes, but on a dahlia -they're the best!
