Fertilizer

APRIL 26, 2024

01. Granular VERSUS Liquid:

Granular fertilizer is a SLOW RELEASE option. I use this once a quarter (when I'm prepping a new bed for planting). Liquid fertilizer is quick and immediate nutrition for your plants.

My favorite brand for both of these is Microlife.

2. GRANULAR FERTILIZER

Quarterly Nutrient Boost:

Apply granular fertilizer up to 4x per year (once a quarter). I usually have 2-3 plantings per year and mix it into the soil before I plant.

03. LIQUID FERTILIZER

My Ride or Die

if you only invest in one fertilizer, a liquid organic all-purpose fertilizer is your best bet. Apply this regularly (weekly, every other week, or once a month are all “regularly” in my book!) by filling a watering can with water, adding a glug of this and watering your plants - it's beneficial for the soil and for the plants themselves so don't be afraid to get it on the leaves!

4. Extra Credit

When I have them on hand, I use the seaweed fertilizer on baby plants (less than a month in the garden) because it promotes root growth. The Max Blooms option is great when a plant is blooming or fruiting

5. Reading Fertilizers

Have you ever noticed the numbers on fertilizer? That's called the NPK ratio. N is for nitrogen and is good for green growth (baby plants!). P is for phosphorus and is good for blooming. and K is for potassium is good for all around plant health.

Some Final Notes

+fertilizer schedule: granular every 3-4 months, liquid up to once a week (but monthly or every other week is good too!)

+fertilizing with granular: sprinkle over top of the soil surface and work it into the soil with a hand rake

+soil drench with liquid: fill a watering can with water, add a shot glass of liquid fertilizer and water your plants with it

+foliar feed with liquid: fill a pressure sprayer or spray bottle with water and the correct amount of liquid (read the label for dilution ratios). Spray the leaves of the plant. I prefer to do this on overcast days or in the evening!
