Bare vs. Own Root Roses

JUNE 07, 2024

I feel like the rose bug is biting even more of my readers - I'm getting questions every week about roses!

Here, I'll take you through own root versus bare root roses, and further down, bare root versus potted roses!

01. OWN ROOT
same rose, tip to tip:

Own root roses are the same variety of rose from the tip of their canes to the tip of their roots. some roses grow best on their own root stock, and if you're using a high quality nursery, like Menagerie Roses, they will have done this research for you!

2. GRAFTED
frankenstein rose:

Grafted roses have DIFFERENT root stock than canes. graft root stock varieties are selected for increased disease, pest, and climate hardiness! you can see where the graft ends, and the canes are grafted.

03. BARE ROOT
dormant + more affordable:

Bare root roses can be found most widely in spring. they are more cost effective to purchase, as there is no soil or green house time to factor into the cost of the rose. however, these roses need to be planted during your spring pruning window, and within 48 hours of receiving them!

4. POTTED ROSES
juvenile; easier to find:

Potted roses can be seen from spring to early summer in nurseries, and have a wider planting window, from early spring-early summer and again in the fall. however, potted roses can often be twice (or more!) as expensive as bare root roses.

No matter what root stock, or dormancy state you purchase your rose in, they will likely take 2 weeks to acclimate to their new home - and require special care during this time.

Once established, all roses (bare root/potted/own root/grafted) will bloom their first spring!

ICYMI - I have a lengthy course all about roses. If you're planning to add roses to your garden this fall, now is a great time to take the course.

Head to The Garden Rose Crash Course and enroll!

Thank you so much for reading!

PS - thank you to Menagerie Roses, for your gorgeous photographs, and your endless education about roses. If you need to buy a rose, this is always the first place I buy from each spring!
