Dahlias of Houston

JUNE 21, 2024

As the dahlias churn out their summer blooms, more and more people are excited to get them growing in Houston! Here are some quick tips to keep them thriving!

01. WHEN

Treat them like tomatoes:

If you're in houston, and it's time to plant tomatoes - it's also time to plant dahlias! I plant mine during the month of March and the month of August.

2. WHERE

Dahlias prefer:

Warm days and cool nights. we don't have those here, so find a spot that has some afternoon shade! don't have that, you can create a shady area with posts and some shade cloth!

03. HOW

Summer cut back:

I practice this on a case by case basis, but if you have dahlias that look funky come August, try cutting them back by 50% (or even to the ground, if you're brave). The tuber will send up new shoots, and it's like a do-over!

I'm always finding that other gardeners have advice that can help even the most experienced grower!

Can you take a moment, hit reply and answer these questions for me:

1. When do you plant your dahlias in Houston?

2. Do you fertilize your dahlias? If so when and with what?

3. Where in your garden are you dahlias planted? Full day sun? Morning or afternoon shade?

4. Have you found any dahlia hacks I should share on reels next week?

PS - one person who replies will win a free copy of my dahlia eBook when it's released in February of 2025!
