What I Wish I was Planting right now: filling the calendar for NEXT fall
AUGUST 29, 2024
Gardeners look ahead - like FAR ahead. This fall is the first time I'll have “extra” space and I'm wishing I had more seeds started for fall bouquets.
This week's email is all about the seeds I wish I started in July + August, and the plants I plan to plant fall of 2025 to extend our bloom season :)
If you're as crazy as me, add these dates to your calendar now - your future gardener self will thank you!
PS, if you're reading this email, you get a 24 hour head start on the September 1 pre-chilled bulb sale. Mark your calendar for August 31 at 9am when all the bulbs will be live on bungalowblooms.com for email subscribers only! xo
01. Zinnias
The queen of summer bouquets, I plan to have transplants ready for next fall. I've shared my zinnia seed sowing schedule before, but now I'm adding one last sowing to have blooms through first frost
• Sow indoors: August 1
• Transplant outside: August 20
• Blooms Begin: October
• Pull: Dec/Jan depending on temps
One more note, plan for these zinnias to be fall colors, like Benary's Giant Wine and Queen Red Lime
02. Marigolds
Historically, I haven't been a huge marigold fan, but the reality is that they're a killer fall flower - great colors, stems, and vase life too!
• Sow Indoors: July 1
• Transplant: July 16
• Bloom Begin: Oct 1
• Pull: Dec 15-ish (I like to plant this crop where I know my bulbs will go!)
03. Sunflowers
TBH it's not too late for these beauties.
Popping them in the ground directly should give you blooms in just 2 months - try sowing 10-15 seeds every week for the month of September and cross your fingers for fall sunflowers!
PS - if you select a branching variety, they will give you a LOT more flowers than a single stem!
04. Gomphrena + Celosia
These cute ball-shaped blooms and spiky plumnes add so much texture and movement to arrangements. Every summer I skip them and regret it come fall. Even just 2-3 plants of each in your landscape could be enough to add to arrangements all fall!
• Sow Indoors: May 1
• Transplant Outdoors: June 1
• Blooms: all summer + fall
• Pull: December
